I'm happy to say that New Jersey is adding a lot to the craft beer discussion, not only in terms of consumption but also creation. Â Carton Brewing is a new brewery that opened in the Atlantic Highlands and they are finding great inspiration for their beers. Â I have only had the pleasure of trying the Boat Beer, but it has definitely left me wanting more.
Cousins Chris and Augie Carton, along with their home brewing friend Jesse Ferguson, founded Carton Brewing earlier this year and will most certainly be making a name for themselves in the New Jersey beer scene. Â Currently in self distribution, you can only find this and their three other beers on draft.
I first tried the Boat beer while visiting Cloverleaf Tavern earlier this week for the tapping of CSB. Brian was talking about this new brewery that opened up and they happened to have the beer on tap so he decided to sample. After hearing him talk it up I snagged a sip and was immediately blown away. So much flavor and mouthfeel for such a low ABV beer. Â At only 4.2%, Boat is definitely a session beer but still out of this world flavorful. Â It is very heavy on the citrus notes, bearing a potent lemon zest taste with a grapefruit sweetness that puckers your tongue all the same. Â Underneath all the fruity flavors there is a spicy, piny-ness layered on top of tasty German malts which carries the character of the beer very well. Â For all intents and purposes this is a high impact low ABV IPA. We will have more from Carton Brewing on I Drink Good Beer in the near future so stay tuned.
