I spent my day off from work yesterday by rewiring the majority of the electronics in my house in preparation of setting up another room.  After eight hours of climbing in, around, and out of the attic, I was beat (to say the least.)  Shortly afterwards Brian suggested I drink a good beer and write about it since I've failed to do so after countless months, so I complied.  My choice for the evening was the HOUBLON CHOUFFE Dobbelen IPA Tripel, brewed by the Achouffe Brewery (Brasserie d'Achouffe) located in the Belgian Ardennes.  The Achouffe Brewery has only been around a short time relative to Belgium's long-standing relationship with beer.  They started in 1982 and began brewing this IPA just four short years ago.

This IPA stands out from most of its counterparts upon first glance due to the untraditional green bottle.  The second thing I noticed about this beer is the elf or gnome found on the front of the label.  Apparently all of this brewery's beers depict an elf on their bottles because elves are a common icon in their location.  When pouring this beer, it exhibits a golden yellow color which finishes off thick and fluffy as the head rises.  The smell gives way to hints of pine and citrus.  There is an obvious amount of yeast circulating throughout the glass, giving it a cloudy appearance which can also be found in white ales.  The first taste gives an immediate impression of drinking a traditional Belgian beer, masking the 9.0% ABV I was expecting to notice.  However, upon each additional taste it transcends to a more traditional hoppy flavor which I am accustomed to with IPA's.  Halfway through the glass and the head still remains thick and intact.  By the time I finish the first pint, the head has shrunk conservatively in size with noticeable remains left along the inside of the glass.  All in all, it was a decent beer. Nothing special to inspire me to search all over town for it, but if I happen to come across it again I will probably snag another bottle.
