Continuing on yesterday's International Stout Day kick, we land in Petaluma California for one of the richest stouts we've had in awhile. Obviously, we are referring to Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout. An aromatic "Imperial-esque" Stout brewed with luscious chocolate and coffee from Sebastopol's own Hardcore Coffee.Â
Apparently, in our "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" commonwealth, any sort of caffeine/alcohol combinations are frowned upon. Obviously, this is no Four Loko, but in the eyes of the FDA, this brew may be pushing the envelope. Â See what the Brewers Association has to say regarding the poised ban on caffeine in alcohol and how it could affect beers like this that have been brewed for 100's of years.
At 8.8% ABV this beer is on the stronger end of the spectrum for the style, but may fall just shy of "Imperial" guidelines. Â However, there is plenty of roasted malt flavors, rich coffee, and hints of chocolate. A little bit of sweetness is very well balanced by the amount of hops, which all seems to come together well with the amount of alcohol in this one.
Check out Lagunitas' "Virtual Tasting" of this creamy stout you won't want to miss this winter season.
