I am not a big Saison drinker but with the weather is warming up and the days getting longer; I get that urge to grab a bottle of the grassy and refreshing brew. Terrapin has come up with a unique twist on the Saison style and made it black. This is their first Side Project beer of 2011 and it's called Tomfoolery.
A - It pours black but when the light hits it you see brownish tint to it. It has a nice beige head that does stick around long with very little lacing.
S - It has to be the most roasty smelling Saison ever! Hints of spice and grass are in there but over powered by the dark malts.
T - The taste of this is as unique as the smell. Peppery, grassy, roasty, yeasty. The mouthfeel is medium with slight carbonation with a dry finish.
Others that have had this beer were not impressed or just flat out thought it was a bad brew but overall this beer was pretty decent. I would like someone else to take an attempt in making a black saison as I would like to try another for a comparison. I don't know what the availability is on this but if you come across this, its worth trying it out.
